MarinaNova Asylum
Jack is coming in with memories his previous game: [insanejournal.com profile] marinanova. He arrived there from about a month after the 'Six months later' section of Torchwood Children of Earth, and shortly after the Doctor’s visit in The End of Time, and was later updated to just before the end of Torchwood Miracle Day.

MarinaNova was a prison dome deep under the sea, which was later revealed to be an entirely virtual environment, with the inhabitants' real bodies preserved in cryo-stasis. It was ruled by a couple of AIs whose favourite form of entertainment was subjecting their prisoners to 24 hour-long experiments, ranging from relatively benign parties and 'mistletoe bots' (who trapped pairs of prisoners in a forcefield until they kissed to release it) to making them think they were married or related to different people or even being thrust twenty years into a possible future.

Jack was trapped there for 247 days, from Day 197 to Day 444 when all the prisoners managed to escape. During most of that time, strict rules were in place to enforce monogamous relationships (visibly portrayed by different coloured, impossible to remove wristbands) and, since the first thing that happened after Jack arrived there was that Ianto showed up from around six months before his death, Jack quickly ended up in a monogamous relationship with Ianto. There were quite a few other people he lusted after, and some of those relationships got to be requited through a variety of mutual dreams, days where he thought he was married to them etc., and one of those was Spike, but unexpectedly it was Ianto who actually made it with Spike first, precipitating no end of drama before the three of them agreed to get three-way relationship bands and determined to make it work with all three of them.

Post-MarinaNova

When the asylum closed and all the inmates were finally returned to their real bodies and able to escape, Jack left with Ianto and Spike to show them the universe, though they had to start with a trip back to Earth for Spike to regain his soul, the soul they'd forced into him in Marina only having been a virtual one. Spike always intended one day to return to Earth again in order to play the part he knew he was destined to play in closing the Hellmouth, but the other two managed to persuade him to leave that for a while. It wasn't as if he was going to age or anything.

Neither was Jack going to age, of course, which had been a subject of some contention between the three of them, since Ianto had been vehement about the fact that he didn't want to age and die while the other two stayed forever young. As meticulously organised as ever, Ianto had set a deadline of five years after their escape from Marinanova Asylum to do something about this problem, and that deadline was fast approaching, but as usual this was something they weren't really talking about.

Jack was fairly sure it would happen eventually, though, and a potentially forever relationship with two other people did have its downsides when you were Jack Harkness, with his insatiable thirst for new experiences, new thrills… new people. Fortunately, due to various "experiments" of their captors in Marinanova, Ianto and Spike were a lot more understanding about that than they might have been, and after a year or two when Jack got itchy feet, the other two agreed he was free to wander and would be welcomed back whenever he wanted to return.

So he headed off in search of excitement, and found it in a couple from Bl'ohxor, a pair of beautiful, purple-skinned ladies who owned their own spaceship and used it to travel from planet to planet, rescuing lost souls and saving oppressed civilisations and basically doing very much what the Doctor had done.

It was pretty much perfect, and he stayed with them for several years, occasionally holophoning Spike and Ianto or popping back to visit them, but otherwise just enjoying being a hero again, with a very generous side of wonderful, inventive, exciting sex, both with Saavi and Taiana and with the various other people they invited into their bed.

And then one day when he'd hopped down to the nearest planet for supplies, the ship blew up, killing both ladies in one fell swoop.

Jack doesn't deal well with loss and he took it hard. Not quite as hard as he'd taken all the deaths associated with the 456 disaster a few years back, but hard enough that when an advert popped up on his screen for an island that offered a break from everything, he grabbed at the opportunity with both hands.
